Memorial Tribute to our Dog Atom

Tragedy strikes again, this time it’s Rocky’s offspring Atom after just less than a month of Rocky's death. We didn’t notice any signs that Atom was sick he was eating and he was doing his usual stuff barking and running around, but last night August 16, 2014 he suddenly vomits his food. Then the morning of August 17 at about 8:00 AM he vomited the water he drank with blood. We gave him paracetamol and anti-biotic since he seems cold. My mom went to the church and buy medicine on her way home and I went out fetch my wife. When my mom arrives home, Atom was hiding his head in a board and when she lifts the board she saw Atom not moving and when she tried to pet him he was already dead. It was so sad, we haven’t had the chance to say goodbye. We were devastated.

Atom is a German shepherd. He is very protective and don’t get along with people that well, but he was a very tough guard dog. He has very soft coat and very huggable. His right ear is folded; it never went straight unlike his siblings. Atom when he was born, was not breathing my uncle resuscitated him to life now they are both gone. He loves chasing laser light. I will miss him, it was so sudden and now he’s gone.

Rocky

After 12 years 4 months 25 days our beloved family dog has join his maker.

Rocky spend his years living with us, he filled our lives with happiness and joy. We love his quirks and temperament. It was very sad moment for us when he stops breathing. He was tired and needed to rest permanently. He can no longer handle his old body. This was meant to happen and we should be thankful that he is no longer suffering.

Rocky is German shepherd dog. He was 6 months old when we got him. Oh, how time flies I can still remember the first day we met Rocky. He was a cheerful wide-eyed German shepherd with a dark snout and round distinct dark spot in his right cheek. He was very attentive and he loves to chase tennis ball. When we were bringing him home he was nervous and he won't let go of his tennis ball grabbing it with his mouth. Maybe it's his way of feeling safe, since the tennis ball was from the previous owner.

He was suppose to be an outside dog, but he refused to sleep outside he constantly knock on the doors and windows until we let him in the house. Rocky loves to ride the car, he always seat in the front passenger seat and bark at everyone who stares at him. He also loves to eat on the table while seating on a chair like a human.

Fast forward to the present day:

Early 2013: We've noticed that Rocky was dragging his right hind legs. So we gave him medicine for it and Glucosamine as supplements. He seems fine and it was on and off, sometimes he drags it other times he can walk and run without problems.

I've made an online research and found the disease Degenerative Myelopathy. On the site caninegeneticdiseases.net it stated "Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs. The affected dog will wobble when walking, knuckle over or drag the feet. As the disease progresses, the limbs become weak and the dog begins to buckle and has difficulty standing. The weakness gets progressively worse until the dog is unable to walk. The clinical course can range from 6 months to 1 year before dogs become paraplegic. If signs progress for a longer period of time, loss of urinary and fecal continence may occur and eventually weakness will develop in the front limbs. Another key feature of DM is that it is not a painful disease. "

May 2014: He was falling off while walking and he was having a hard time getting up on top of chairs and bed.

June 1, 2014: His hind legs are getting weaker everyday. By this time, he was dragging his right hind legs all the time.

June 21, 2014: Rocky seems weaker and he's eating less food. He stumbles while walking and he dropped on the floor it took some time before he was able to pick himself up. He can no longer use his hind legs, both of it.

My mom decided to cancel his trip because of Rocky. It seems he knew my mom was leaving since he won't eat and he looks week but when she canceled, he seems to be energize but not to his old self. He was also eating again.

We also talked about having him euthanized to spare him from pain. We talk to his vet regarding it.

June 29, 2014: the vet visited for our dogs check-up and vaccinations, oh by the way we have 8 dogs Rocky included. The vet also brought the drugs for euthanasia incase we decided to give it to Rocky. But Rocky seems enliven, though he can no longer use his hind legs he was dragging his body using his front feet and he was eating well. So, we decided not to let him go.

As days passed, his health deteriorates and he loss his urinary and fecal continence. We are also giving him water through a syringe.

July 16, 2014: We were hit by a very strong Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun), I never thought it was that strong when I heard it on the news. The typhoon hit us hard, it dropped power lines, the roof in our garage was blown away. There was no power for 2 days. Rocky who loves to sleep in front of a fan had a hard time without power because of the heat. We gave him enough fluids with powdered oral electrolytes because he is no longer eating. By this time his health was deteriorating really fast.

July 17, 2014: He looked worst and he can barely drink. I also noticed tears in his eyes.

July 18, 2014: In the morning, he defecate blood. He was breathing heavily. We knew that it is near. We said our goodbyes; we embraced and cuddle him, he even lift up his head to look at my wife as if he was saying his goodbye.

He passed away at about 10:30 PM.

I decided to write this memorial for our beloved dog Rocky to help us grieve and to honor him and thanked him for the happiness that he brought us and for the joyful memories that we will cherished as long as we lived.  I never thought that I would cry for a dog.

We will not forget you Rocky we love you. Until we meet again, at the Rainbow Bridge.
